The stakes of the in vitro tests for the development of new cosmetic products - Nice (France) - July 12, 2012

In vitro methods play a strategic role in the development of a cosmetic product.

Indeed the cosmetic regulatory forbids the use of animals to demonstrate the safety of new products. This framework implies to validate alternative methods to the classical toxicity studies using animals.

The validation of a new alternative method, targeting the end-points of a regulatory file, represents a real challenge for cosmetic industry. This stake constituted a major and emblematic axis of research for the flavor and fragrance competitiveness cluster (Perfumes Aromas Scents and Savors).

The new cosmetic product claims for efficiency increase the level of scientific arguments and therefore reinforce the place of in vitro methods. Indeed the in vitro tests improve both in terms of throughput and the amount of information derived from the screens allowing to reduce the recourse to heavy and costly clinical studies

International experts will be present to recall the positions of regulatory authorities and draw up an overview of tools and methods available to demonstrate efficiency and safety of a new cosmetic product.
